Winterising an Irrigation System
Winterising an Irrigation System is an essential task to ensure the longevity and efficiency of your irrigation setup. As temperatures drop, water left in the irrigation pipes, fittings and hose connectors can freeze, expand, and potentially cause damage. Here are some steps to effectively winterise your irrigation system:
- Turn Off the Water Supply: Locate and shut off the main water valve that supplies your irrigation system. This prevents any additional water from entering the pipes.
- Drain the System: Use the manual drain valves to release any remaining water in the pipes. For systems with automatic drains, turn off the controller and activate a zone to relieve pressure, allowing the system to drain automatically.
- Blow Out the Pipes: If your system doesn’t have automatic drains, you may need to use an air compressor to blow out any remaining water. Attach the compressor to the blow-out port and systematically clear each zone.
- Insulate Exposed Components: Wrap any above-ground pipes, backflow preventers, and other exposed components with insulation tape or foam covers to protect them from freezing temperatures.
- Protect the Controller: If your irrigation controller is outside, consider covering it or moving it indoors. Ensure it’s set to the “off” position for the winter.
- Check for Repairs: Before you finish, inspect your system for any signs of wear or damage. Fixing these issues now can save you time and trouble in the spring.
By following these steps, you can rest assured that your irrigation system will be ready to spring back into action when warmer weather returns. Proper winterisation not only protects your investment but also ensures your garden will flourish for many seasons to come.
