How to fit a compression fitting?

To fit a compression fitting in your irrigation system, follow these simple steps to ensure a secure and leak-free connection:

  1. Gather Your Tools and Materials: You will need a wrench, pipe cutter, and the compression fitting itself. Ensure you have the correct size fitting for your pipe.
  2. Turn Off the Water Supply: As with any plumbing task, make sure to turn off the water supply to prevent any leaks or water damage during installation.
  3. Cut the Pipe: Use a pipe cutter to make a clean, straight cut on the pipe where the compression fitting will be installed. Ensure the cut ends are smooth and free of burrs.
  4. Slide on the Compression Nut and Ring: Place the compression nut over the pipe end, followed by the compression ring (also known as a ferrule). Ensure that both are correctly oriented with the threads towards the fitting.
  5. Insert the Pipe into the Fitting: Push the pipe firmly into the body of the compression fitting until it reaches the internal stop.
  6. Secure the Compression Nut: Slide the compression ring up to the fitting and hand-tighten the compression nut onto the fitting threads.
  7. Tighten the Nut: Use a wrench to tighten the compression nut further, ensuring a snug fit. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this could damage the fitting or pipe.
  8. Check for Leaks: Turn the water supply back on slowly and check the connection for any signs of leaks. If leaks are detected, slightly tighten the compression nut further until the leaks stop.

By following these steps, you can successfully install a compression fitting, ensuring a reliable and efficient connection in your irrigation system.
